What is hobby horsing?

Hobby horsing, also known as keppihevonen in Finnish, is a sport and hobby that involves simulating horseback riding with a hobby horse.

It's particularly popular in Finland, but has gained traction internationally. Participants create or purchase hobby horses, often elaborately decorated, and engage in activities such as:

  • Dressage: Performing precise movements and patterns, similar to competitive equestrian dressage.
  • Show Jumping: Jumping over obstacles with the hobby horse.
  • General Riding: Simply riding and enjoying the movement and connection with the "horse."

Hobby horsing emphasizes creativity, athleticism, and community. Participants often organize competitions, workshops, and meetups. While seemingly whimsical, it requires considerable physical fitness, coordination, and dedication. The community fosters creativity through crafting the horses and choreographing routines.
